Ubuntu MATE

Ubuntu MATE

Ubuntu MATE is a stable, easy-to-use operating system with a configurable desktop environment. It is ideal for those who want the most out of their computers and prefer a traditional desktop metaphor. With modest hardware requirements it is suitable for modern workstations, single board computers and older hardware alike. Ubuntu MATE makes modern computers fast and old computers usable.

I have been using Ubuntu Mate for over 3 years, it has been stable and an absolute go to distro. Using the Munity launcher is the preferred desktop interface and it is clean and easy to use. The software boutique is great and allows access to a great curated set of best in class applications.

Have been using this distro since 14.04 and must say, there is nothing that comes close to satisfying my stable- and DE itch. I don't even distrohop anymore, why should I? Ubuntu Mate has everything I need! In the past I would try out somehting else but come sprinting back to Ubuntu Mate since it just worked and did everything I asked it to. Updates work flawlessly. The Raspberry Pie never complained. The software Boutique is excellent for me as well as users that want to dip their toes in Linux. Mate Tweak though, wow, what a great utility! This is a feature I value the most. One-click Destop customization that actually works. I love how the theming is implemented. I especially like the dark themes that are available. The community forum is friendly and users discuss current problems in detail. Snaps, Flatpacks, Appimages and whatever else is out there... it works! Steam, yes please, put a checkmark behind that! Are there any negative points you ask? Sure, I've had problems with various GPUs in the past (three monitor setup where the outter two are vertical). But these problems were already known and well documented by Ubuntu (plain). A workaround would eventuall pop up to get things going again. With laptops however (Dell Latitude 12.5 variatins and Lenovo X series), I never ran into problems (don't care about fingerprint readers). Bottom line is: If you don't want to futz around and just want a STABLE and WORKING distro that never dissapoints, choose Ubuntu Mate. Enables a novice with the right tools but also keeps a veteran happy. A big thank you to the Ubuntu Mate Team!

Best desktop ever created. They should never have strayed from Gnome 2 in the first place, but thankfully Mate exists. If it did not, I’d use XFCE, which is also excellent.

I've been thoroughly happy with Ubuntu Mate since 16.04! Martin Wimpress has continued to do a great job with this distro. The new 19.10 looks like its going to be another great edition!

Has run solid for me since 16.04 on Dell and HP hardware. Handles servers without breaking a sweat. Easy to configure and tailor to user preference. Haven't tried it with an IoT device. It's my go to OS for new users.

In my opinion an OS should boot and get out of your way and as far as a desktop goes Ubuntu Mate does just that. Martin Wimpress has made a distribution that just works out of the box. His dedication to the distribution and to Linux in general is to be commended. I installed it on my father’s computer and he made the transition from Windows to Linux in just a few days. I have installed on all my children’s laptops and despite the fact they use windows 10 in school they have no problems either. Ubuntu Mate is my go to recommendation for anyone wanting to try Linux out for the first time. Mate provides everything you need to free yourself and your computer.

Yes is stable but very buggy at times and takes a while for them to iron them out. I’ve tested it in compatible hardware but it seems to be the same thing time after time with it being buggy out of all the flavors it’s the most buggy.

The bottom line is that it just works. I try different distros from time to time just to see what's out there, but I always come back to Ubuntu MATE.

This distro shows that when you take something that works well and continue evolving it (as opposed to trying a single revolutionary change), a really good, really useful and pleasing to use desktop is the result. Whether you are a beginner or seasoned user, just want a finished UI or want to customise your desktop to be uniquely yours, and need the breadth of software availability or community of users that Ubuntu offers, then this is a great distro choice.

this is the ubuntu starter distro for the masses! i've used it for both desktop and server uses. as a unity user, this was the perfect distro following the demise of the unity desktop proper; i've had zero work flow issue since switches way back when mate wasn't even official; the ubuntu mate team is a reasonable and steadfast group

It's been my"goto" desktop since I started using Linux. I play around with other distros( and many of them are also very nice) but UM 18.04LTS is my daily driver because it just works. I have access to all the common apps that an "office" desktop user would need.

I've deployed hundreds of desktops and notebooks at my company, with only slight adjustments to the skel file, with Ubuntu-Mate. For my users, it has a good familiar user interface - I deploy the Redmond desktop. It is stable and easily managed singularly via ssh or collectively via saltstack. It can also look like a very professional and corporate operating system with a customized sign on page - another minor skel file mod. Caja, the file manager, is easy to work with and Samba shares can quickly be mapped even from an MS file server. I've found Caja much more user friendly for end users especially when mapping file shares than the dolphin file manager. I have tested many distros for use in a corporate environment and Ubuntu-Mate is still the best choice in my opinion. I like it so much I use it on my personal notebook.

A sane desktop for traditional desktop PCs. Emerging support for UMPC devices. Supports Raspberry Pi (with a headless option) which is great for prototyping IoT devices. You can run it on servers to provision cloud-based workstations. Solid all-rounder.

I'm using it on about 10 personal devices at home and at work. Also I run 150 fat clients with LTSP server in two buildings. System is stable, fast and reliable. User-experience is the most stable while using LTS versions (as it is not based on GNOME sHell) and configurable (have traditional desktop as it was in GNOME 2.32 but with modern applications; also has modern Unity-like and macOS-like with global menus). The IoT part - for example Bluetooth is supported with Blueman and other utilities; Wi-Fi works out the box.

This is the most usable desktop environment. Based on decades of research and development in usability from the original GNOME desktop, instead of throwing all that out in the chase for shiny, it has been modernized while retaining the same solidly usable interface.
