Kubuntu

Kubuntu is an official flavour of the Ubuntu operating system which uses the KDE Plasma Desktop instead of the GNOME desktop environment. As part of the Ubuntu project, Kubuntu uses the same underlying systems. Every package in Kubuntu shares the same repositories as Ubuntu, and it is released regularly on the same schedule as Ubuntu. Kubuntu was sponsored by Canonical Ltd. until 2012, and then directly by Blue Systems. Now employees of Blue Systems contribute upstream, to KDE and Debian, and Kubuntu development is led by community contributors.

A great, stable OS with a familiar face. Easily customizable if wanted, but will stay out of your way when you want to get work done. It's been amazing on my devices as both Desktop and Server distributions.

The maintainers do not keep it updated to the current version of plasma. On an LTS release plasma can become quite out of date. They used to have a backports that took care of that, however it has been put on the back burner. Even the releases between the LTSs do not have access to backports. Currently there are bugs in plasma that annoy some, such as the shifting desktop -- clicking on an icon just after booting causes all the icons to shift to the right by a couple of pixels. That's minor however it shows a messiness that is noticeable and annoying. The end result is that the LTS of the distro has its main feature quite out of date by the time the next LTS is released.

Kubuntu feels to me the most user friendly implementation of kde plasma.

I installed Kubuntu on my daily driver and it is working brilliantly, and thanks to it's low resource usage I was able to convert my 2 in 1 with small tweaking to run Kubuntu as well. I doubt that I will be switching back to Gnome, not because KDE is better I just enjoy the new plasma more at the moment.

Although the QT widget set is great, I think the KDE developers, although intelligent, just don't have an eye for simplification or elegance. They don't have taste. The SMB performance (with KIO slaves) is also slower than compared with GNOME's GVFS.

Good distro for former Windows users, who like to have control over their workflow. Plasma is a great desktop, but you can get newer version by going KDE Neon, or Manjaro. Unfortunately, Kubuntu inherits all the software and snap applications chaos from Ubuntu repositories, which is, in my experience, very confusing for new users.

In my personal opinion, Kubuntu is _the best_ Linux distro out there. The KDE desktop environment has unbelievable stability, amazing customizability and more than enough speed for everyday use. It may result in multiple months tweaking and seeking the perfect configuration, but if you need a distro that you can count on 100% of the time when you need it to, and enough toys and bells to keep you on your toes when you're adventurous give Kubuntu a try, you won't be disappointed.

I use Kubuntu on an ancient HP 6730 laptop (albeit upgraded with Max RAM and an SSD) and I love it! It was the best tip I ever got from the "Ask Noah Show"!

Using Kubuntu makes me wish Ubuntu used KDE as the default desktop environment, instead of GNOME. So versatile, and it's easy to recreate Unity desktop environment. Kubuntu FTW!

I've been using Kubuntu for many years, and know many of the past and present packagers and other developers. It just keeps getting better!
