CentOS

CentOS is a Linux distribution that provides a free, enterprise-class, community-supported computing platform functionally compatible with its upstream source, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). In January 2014, CentOS announced the official joining with Red Hat while staying independent from RHEL, under a new CentOS governing board. The first CentOS release in May 2004, numbered as CentOS version 2, was forked from RHEL version 2.1AS. Since the release of version 7.0, CentOS officially supports only the x86-64 architecture, while versions older than 7.0-1406 also support IA-32 with Physical Address Extension (PAE). As of December 2015, AltArch releases of CentOS 7 are available for the IA-32 architecture, Power ISA, and for the ARMv7hl and AArch64 variants of the ARM architecture.

Great server OS. Basically RHEL, but without the support plan and the branding. I wouldn't really recommend as a desktop because the software selection is pretty minimal.

CentOS is a rock solid distribution that's RHEL compatible. You will find no better server distribution out there to be sure. However, I wouldn't recommend it for a daily driver desktop - the packages are just too old, slow to get updated, and, honestly, its just not where the team is focused, and rightly so. If you're looking for a server distribution, look no further, though, especially if you want to learn about RHEL.

Very old packages, and an incredibly small collection of packages in the default repos. Unfortunately, my experience was that nonetheless CentOS was unstable, crashed and had memory leaks.

CentOS has been my favorite Server OS for sometime. It shines in three areas - security, stability and package availability. SELinux is enabled out of the box and the nic is disable until the user decides to enable it. It tends to keep the user safe with security minded defaults. I rarely have any issues with instability - it just runs and keeps running. It will also install on just about any hardware and with minimal memory and storage. It easily installs on the virtualization platforms I use - EXSI, vCloud Director and especially Proxmox (my favorite). The package manager is easy to use and has great features. CentOS is also the best OS (without service contracts) to use with FreeIPA, which, imho, is the best identity manager offered. In addition to the above, RedHat has great documentation and all of it can be directly applied to CentOS because it is the same OS minus the branding.

Every server I've used in the past 6 years has had either CentOS or Scientific Linux on it (both RHEL clones, although SL has ended recently). It's stability is why it powers some of the most powerful computing clusters in the world, like CERN's computing grid.

CentOS has been my go-to server distro for years. If you need to be absolutely 100% sure that your system is going to run, and all software on it has been thoroughly tested you'd be hard pressed to do better than RHEL / CentOS. I've used it for clients as a workstation OS. You'll obviously run into a few challenges as it's not designed as a desktop distro first. Seafile for example does not work on 8 but it will hopefully be available soon. IMHO the best server distro out there.

Without a doubt - works best on servers. Or it can be great stable desktop when newest versions of packages are not required. No experience with IoT. Working with CentOS servers - they can be great, when managed properly. No way to break the packaging manager (in contrast to (*****u based distros). There are great (long living repos available). One thing I have to mention - doing more network related work I can say that the network stack in CentOS can work way better then some other (*****u based distros). Many (re-branded) enterprise tools (including Active Directory alternative) are easy to install on CentOS! Knowing CentOS well makes you almost a specialist when you have to work with RHEL.

CentOS (a clone of Red Hat Enterprise Linux) is the most solid Linux platform available today. It is versatile allowing you to run it as a utility desktop or most commonly as a solid server instance. It is my go to for production and has been the foundation of my entire IT career!

Fantastic Server OS, Desktop is a little harder to get going in a pretty way on Centos 7 (May change with Centos 8) Also, Most Documentation matches the redhat documentation of the same version.
