KDE Neon

KDE Neon

KDE neon is a set of software repositories for Ubuntu long-term support (LTS) releases with latest 64-bit version of KDE desktop and applications. It is also the name given to a Ubuntu LTS-based Linux distribution that utilizes said repositories. It aims to provide the users with rapidly updated Qt and KDE software, while updating the rest of the OS components from the Ubuntu repositories at the normal pace. It comes in user and developer editions. The KDE neon Linux distribution is focused on the development of KDE. The emphasis is on bleeding edge software packages sourced directly from KDE and offers programmers early access to new features, but potentially at the cost of greater susceptibility to software bugs. KDE neon announced in January 2017 that the distribution switching its installer from Ubiquity to Calamares due to Ubiquity "not having some features". In February 2018, KDE neon developers removed the LTS Editions from the downloads page, but kept these editions in the download mirrors because of "lots of people asking which edition to use and what the difference is." In May 2018, KDE started changing KDE neon from being based on Ubuntu 16.04 to Ubuntu 18.04. KDE neon preview images, based on Ubuntu 18.04, became available in August 2018.

The best for KDE Neon. Not half as difficult or complicated as a lot of people seem to think it is!

beautiful distro. it just shows how fast and snappy kde can be. Yes it needs some tinkering to set it up to your liking, but it's worth it and definitely recommended for people who are comfortable with linux in general. For new user I'd recommend Kubuntu, you still get the kde experience with no tinkering.

A really great showcase of the latest and greatest KDE software. Only downside (in my opinion) it's basically Kubuntu LTS. I love that it's KDE but that's about it.

IoT and Server categories do not necessarily apply for this distro as it is designed with the desktop in mind--the Plasma 5 desktop, that is. I have used Neon since the announcement that Ubuntu was dropping Unity in lieu of Gnome for the main desktop environment. I have also been using the original install since then without any catastrophic hitches. And when I say original install, I am including the upgrade from 16.04 base to 18.04 base, again without any hitches. Largely, the distro is very stable and is a pleasure to use. With the addition of Latte Dock and the capabilities of activities, you can have any and all desktop look-a-likes at the press of a button. I do not think I will every this distro, the noblest of all the gases (chemistry joke :D).

Put this on a Chromebook and it runs flawlessly. Only issues are Chromebook related. So I get the battery life and portability, but the freedom and full-OS features that come from Linux. Still very lightweight even on a low spec HP 11 G5 EE. Doesn't freeze, no lag.

Rock solid package base, I've never had stability issues. Plasma desktop/KDE apps are the most configurable to meet your needs anywhere, and KDE is on the move constantly improving their software. Couldn't be happier!

We use NEON for the business and private. @home, @offie, @customer, @schools. With an enterprise tool like foreman/puppet it is the absolutely best Desktop. LTS Backend and Rolling Frontend. We love it!. It is usabel also for Terminalserver with Nomachine Enterprise. Really you can play real 3D games on it (not @office :-) ). Running here on Proxmox and Nvidia graphics passthrough.

Being a big fan of Plasma having a solid LTS base while continuously getting the latest developments is a perfect fit for me. I have never experienced any issues with the updates from Neon.

My daily driver. Use it in my bedroom laptop for surfing the web and watching Plex. Use it in my studio for producing electronic music and editing my podcast. Use it in my living room rig for gaming (Steam/Proton) and watching films on Plex. KDE Plasma 5 has matured incredibly well over the last years. I've been using KDE Neon since it was fairly new. I'm never tempted to try out another distro or DE, because I'm really into the whole KDE ecosystem. Great work, keep going folks!

As said in the description Neon provides the cutting edge of KDE / Plasma. As a fanboy this is my distro of choice. HOWEVER it comes at the price of being unable to use most other Qt based software packages from Ubuntu. If you to are a KDE fanatic and don't mind forgoing LXQt and installing Telegram in a container I can not recommend it enough.

I have this running on a spare all-in-one HP in my basement. It runs an emby server for my family and is also available for web browsing and other simple tasks. I've had a few errors in terms of desktop usage due to the constant updates. I think it's good for intermediate users but not for beginners.

KDE Plasma Desktop at its finest. Sadly an OS is more than just a desktop and here comes where you miss it total. Ubuntu LTS base is just to old and slow. I need a PPA for everything, starting from the kernel and graphicsdriver, to simple software like gimp. So one star for a nice KDE Distro. Another one for the fast releases. But thats it.

I tried out Neon while I was distro hopping last year and I really liked it. It was the first time I'd used the Plasma desktop since KDE 4.2, which I did not like at all, and I was refreshed by Plasma 5. I'm sure that if I took the time to go through and really configure everything the way I'd want it to be that I would have loved it and stuck with it longer, but I didn't so I switched away after about 2 weeks on it. That's not to say anything bad about the distro itself though. I like the rolling release model and the passion of the community/developers. Definitely give it a shot if you haven't tried it.

I use this as my main distro for my mobile desktop (intel nuc w/ a 10" monitor on a tripod). It's great even while working on portrait resolution all the time. Discover's constantly getting improvements and has been faster w/ less bugs recently. Having the option to install snaps and flatpaks from there is also a nice addition. I like the minimal choice on installed package was nice too. Didn't need the office suite most distros have. It's also always a delight to have every window just where i set them even after restarting.

It's fun having the cutting edge Neon DE instead of Kubuntu which I also run but has the LTS Plasma DE. Easily the best looking distro. Updates using Discover are working much better lately. I did have a problem installing it to SDB in my system when it overwrote grub on SDA, so watch out for that. An excellent distro for KDE Plasma lovers.
